It is a well-known fact that the key to building a sturdy structure is a strong foundation, something we learn as children playing with blocks. Even the strongest of foundations, however, can begin to deteriorate over time. When this happens in our homes, we may see signs, such as cracks in our walls, doors that refuse to open, and floors that sag, that indicate it is time to consider foundation repair. If we ignore the signs of a failing foundation, or outright reject the necessary repairs, our home may collapse around us when a terrible storm blows through town. We are not so different than structures in that our lives also must have strong foundations if we are to be sturdy. Our foundations can deteriorate over time, and when we ignore the signs of a failing foundation, we may collapse when the storms of life blow through.

Our current crisis has perhaps revealed to us the places within us where there are cracks in the walls, doors what won’t open, and floors that sag. These signs of deterioration are concerning, but discovering them gives us the opportunity to draw closer to the Lord, to seek the foundation repair only He can provide. In Matthew 8:24-25, Jesus says, “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.” The good news is that, when we allow God to shore up our foundations with His Word, He will eliminate our cracks, open the doors, and prop up the floors. Our foundation repair will allow us to endure the rain, the floods and the winds for our lives will be founded on the Rock.

Father, reveal to us the signs of our failing foundation. When we begin to rely on ourselves and our own abilitites, remind us that, without you, we are building our lives on the sand. Strengthen us, Lord, to withstand the storms that come our way, and draw us ever closer to you, our Rock and our Redeemer. Amen.
