Magnify the Lord’s Name Written By: Charise McNutt
2 Samuel 7:18-25
“Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:
‘Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And as if this were not enough in your sight, Sovereign Lord, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant—and this decree, Sovereign Lord, is for a mere human!
What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, Sovereign Lord. For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant.
How great you are, Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. And who is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt?[d] You have established your people Israel as your very own forever, and you, Lord, have become their God.
Lord God, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised, so that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The Lord Almighty is God over Israel!’ And the house of your servant David will be established in your sight.”
David, through the prophet Nathan, had just been given a word from the Lord. He stood in awe of the Lord’s covenant with him. David was fully aware of his unworthiness and humbly sat before the Lord. Let us not miss what that means, Friends. David, the king of Israel, went and sat before the Lord and humbly prayed to Him a prayer of awe and thanksgiving. He knew God’s character and that God was doing these great things. He knew that God was doing it so David would know Him and truly grasp how great He is. David poured out his heart in praise and received the word spoken to him. His desire was that the name of the Lord would be magnified.
Psalm 119:49-50 says, “Remember the word to Your servant, upon which You have caused me to hope. This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your word has given me life.” Verse 15 says, “I will meditate on Your precepts, and contemplate Your ways. I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word.” My friends, let us draw away from the busyness and chatter and let us sit before the Lord. Let’s read of His testimonies and promises to us and take time to marvel at His goodness. Let’s receive His promises with a shout of, “Yes and Amen”! Oh, He loves to speak to you and He loves to hear you speak to Him. It is a beautiful relationship blossoming. Let it blossom and bloom to bring Him praise, honor and glory.
