The New Covenant

Luke 11:1-11 NIV
1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, 2 just
as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the
word. 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I
too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know
the certainty of the things you have been taught.
5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly
division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous
in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. 7 But they were
childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
8 Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, 9 he was
chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn
incense. 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were
praying outside.
11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.

I love how it mentions that Zechariah was chosen by lot… we would take it as coincidence that
Zechariah was chosen but God was in the choosing. I heard a message this morning by Alistair Begg
who said that, “If we believe that God is everywhere, why would we not believe that He is in the
coincidences? That seems so strange to us that coincidences are God’s way of making Himself
anonymous (that last sentence is credited to Albert Einstein).”
Why would God make Himself anonymous? If He were on display, a celebrity as it were… would
there be relationship? No, it would be a distant knowing controlled by our terms. Fans research their
idols to various degrees; some are “experts” on all the details of that person’s life/career while others
are full of “oh yes, I just LOVE him”. Both camps do not actually know the person they idolize.
God reveals Himself just enough to make us want to seek Him in return. This is not God playing
games. When we meet a child for the first time, we don’t grab up the child, plop them on our lap,
shove a toy in one hand, an ice cream in the other and give them a tight hug and sloppy kiss on the
forehead. We speak kindly and softly to the child and then receive them warmly when they come
near.
God reveals Himself through the person of Jesus to which we open ourself up to Him more and more
as intimacy grows. This is the natural choreography of developing a relationship built on trust.
For the Word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything He does. Psalm 33:44
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways
acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths” Proverbs 3:4-6
Father God, thank you for being absolutely trustworthy. This fallen world has shown us the opposite
of who You are but we praise You for Your Word that shows us that there is none like You.
